A rare promo northern soul 45 with crossover appeal from this legendary artist. Such an amazing voice. This one’s more upbeat than his usual sounds and always gets the floor moving. For more of my sounds, go to: http://www.fortyfivan.com

A seriously heavy and highly sought after funk 45 from this group of US musicians living in France that later went on to become the Lafayette Afro Rock Band. This 45 contains the 2 best tracks from the album and comes with one of the best pic sleeves of all time. Killer breakbeat and horns with a nice hint of psychedelic organ. This is an incredible double sided downtempo stoner funk 45 with “mythical raer” private press status. This Ohio group cut two 45s with only a handful of each known to be in existence. Recently, the Numero Group released the 2 45s and 4 unreleased cuts as a high quality packaged reissue as expected from them. If you like this track, check out the rest at… http://www.numerogroup.com/catalog_detail.php?uid=01246#. For more of my sounds, go to: http://www.fortyfivan.com

Killer funk track with a nice hip hop break intro. This one sounds near identical to the easier to find Bobby Day version on Byrdland, but with heavier drums and rawer vocals. Check out more sounds at: http://www.fortyfivan.com

I originally bought this for the flip “Ooh, Song”, which I used to close out my latest Summer Soulstice mix, and was pleasantly surprised when I flipped it over to play this track. Soft soul with a killer bassline and haunting vocals. Can’t find much information about this other than it’s from Bloomington, Indiana. Check out more sounds at: http://www.fortyfivan.com

Heavy Detroit funk 45 that really has it all. I almost lost it the first time I heard that fuzz come in… was not expecting that at all! Great drum break for those into that kind of thing. Check out more sounds at: http://www.fortyfivan.com

This legendary group from Benin has seen a resurgence in the past years as a wealth of their music has been reissued by a number of labels. They sure were busy, and trying to be a completist for their catalog would be quite the task. I came across this obscure 45 a few years ago luckily, and it’s one of my favorites from them. Heavy hip hop style beat hat sounds amazing on a loud system. Check out more sounds at: http://www.fortyfivan.com

If I were to have a theme song, this would be it. I open every 45 set with this and sometimes envision my skate video section to this song… even though that will never happen. I almost lost it when I heard this in the closing credits to Ocean’s Twelve… David Holmes knows how to select them, that’s for sure. A product of Germany’s Klaus Doldinger, who had his hand in many projects, most famously Passport, which I grew up listening to from my dad’s record collection. This is one of his more obscure groups, but definitely my favorite. Check out more sounds at: http://www.fortyfivan.com

Some call this the “other side” to the Scorpio & His People 45, but it hits just as hard as The Unforgiven… and it has a clean break if you’re into that kind of thing. I first heard this track when Dante Carfagna was a guest on Mr Finewine’s Downtown Soulville show, but forgot about it until hanging at Deejay OM’s place one day. He played The Unforgiven for me and I was beyond floored. A couple years later, I managed to score a copy for a price I’m ashamed to admit, but well worth it for one of the heaviest and rarest funk 45s in existence. I’ve grown to like this side just as much, if not more than The Unforgiven. Check out more sounds at: http://www.fortyfivan.com
